US and Russia sign meat trade agreement

United States' meat and poultry products would gain access to the Russian market after both countries signed a meat trade agreement.

The US and Russian Federation would be able to strengthen agricultural relations and negotiate agricultural issues with greater certainty as part of Russia's bid to join the World Trade Organization, according to the US government.

Under the agreement, the US may export a specific quantity of each product at a relatively low tariff.  Quantities above these special measures would be subject to a higher tariff.

The agreement also includes rules on the allocation and distribution of import licenses and veterinary permits, and establishes a consultative mechanism for addressing trade-related matters, including animal health and meat safety issues.

The US meat and poultry industry have given their support for this agreement.

The annual value of US meat and poultry exports to Russia amount to US$480 million on average since 2000.  Russia is the top, sixth and seventh largest export market for US poultry products, pork and beef respectively.
