Argentina beef production registers sharp decline

Argentina's beef production fell sharply in April, according to the World Beef Report (WBR).

Production fell 27 percent compared with Apr 2005, to 190,600 tonnes, as a result of government measures curtailing beef exports.

According to estimations made by the National Agricultural Trade Agency, slaughter in April was 30 percent lower on-year..

Export beef processors in Argentina remained closed or were operating at reduced capacity after beef exports were banned in March this year, according to WBR.

Although slaughter and production levels were probably low in May, it is likely to have picked up in June after the government partially lifted the ban.
