Ho Chi Minh City pilots certified pork programme in traditional markets

BAF Vietnam is supplying product to the city's first "Green Tick" pork stalls in traditional markets, with the Department of Industry and Trade eyeing an eventual rollout across more than 400 market sites.
Ho Chi Minh City has launched a pilot programme to introduce certified pork into traditional wet markets, with BAF Vietnam Agricultural Joint Stock Company supplying product to two dedicated stalls at Tan My Market under the city's "Green Tick for Responsibility" quality certification scheme.
The programme, initiated by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade on 9 June, marks the first time the certification - previously available only through supermarkets and convenience stores - has entered traditional distribution channels. Nguyen Minh Hung, Deputy Head of the Trade Management Department, said the department is considering expanding the scheme to more than 400 traditional markets across the city.
Under the model, pigs are inspected at the farm before slaughter, processed using modern procedures, and transported in refrigerated vehicles to the point of sale. A digital pork trading platform, currently operating on a pilot basis, connects large livestock operators directly with market traders, reducing the number of intermediaries and cutting distribution costs. Retail prices at the certified stalls are positioned competitively: pork leg at VND100,000/kg (US$3.93), pork belly at VND150,000/kg (US$5.88), pork ribs at VND180,000/kg (US$7.06) and pork loin at VND120,000/kg (US$4.71).
The initiative is designed to address longstanding quality and traceability concerns in traditional market channels, where products have historically passed through multiple intermediaries and faced risks including adulteration. Participating traders receive supply assurance and quality guarantees, along with support in brand identity development to build credibility with collective kitchens, schools and wholesale buyers.
