Brazil's pork exports slow down in May

Brazil's May exports were down 18 percent by volume and 16.9 percent by value as compared to April, according to Brazilian Association of Pork Industry Exports.

Brazilian pork exports totalled 50,500 tonnes or 8.6 percent more in May 2006. It was valued at US$101.1 million or 2.6 percent up from the same period.

The association says May was the second consecutive month of downturn international process while analyst Paulo Molinari of Safras and Mercado said the downward variation was a common trend.

The average price last month was 5.54 percent less than the same period in 2006 while prices fell 0.12 percent in April. However year to date prices are 0.99 percent higher than last year. Molinari believes that the greater Brazilian supply is pressuring the export market as the country has to "find an outlet one way or another for its product."
