JBS to construct world's largest lab-grown meat plant in Spain

Major global beef producer JBS SA has announced plans to build the world's largest facility for lab-grown meat in Spain, Bloomberg reported.

The plant, owned by cultivated meat firm BioTech Foods, which is 51% owned by JBS, will have a capacity to produce about 1,000 metric tonnes of cultivated meat per year, with the potential to expand output to 4,000 tonnes.

JBS intends to invest US$41 million in the facility located east of Bilbao in San Sebastian, which is expected to be completed next year.

In addition to the lab-grown meat plant, JBS plans to invest $60 million in a research institute in southern Brazil dedicated to developing technology for producing protein from animal cells.
