France's soft wheat exports down 17% on year

Since the beginning of the 2011-12 season on July 1, France exported 1.2 million tonnes of soft wheat in April, bringing the total to 13.8 million tonnes, down 17% on the same period last season, customs data showed on Monday (June 11).

Shipments outside the EU amounted to 580,490 tonnes, bringing the total so far this season to 7.7 million, down 30% on the same period in 2010-11, the data showed.

France exported a record 12.9 million tonnes of soft wheat outside the EU in the last season, when it benefited from the absence of rival exporter Russia, which banned shipments for most of the season following a drought-hit harvest.

Algeria remained by far the leading destination for French wheat by the end of April, with exports of 3.05 million tonnes so far this season, slightly below the 3.2 million recorded at the same point in 2010-11.

Within the 27-member EU, France exported 607,977 tonnes of soft wheat in April, putting the total so far in 2011-12 at 6.1 million, up 10% on the same period last season.
