Uruguay beef exports sets record in May
Uruguayan beef exports hit a new record in May, when volumes increased 41 percent to reach 38,830 tonnes while value rose 65 percent to reach US$112 million.
Uruguay has been moving away from the US market. Only 22 percent of Uruguay's unprocessed beef exports in May were headed for the US, down from 76 percent a year ago.
Russia has now become the main destination for Uruguayan beef.
Meanwhile, Korea has re-opened its markets to processed Uruguayan beef after banning it for 5 years due to foot and mouth disease concerns, according to the World Beef Report.
Only pre-cooked meat and by-products are allowed. Firms are currently evaluating the prices and products air-freighted into the country. Volumes, like those before the ban, are expected to be negligible.
