China's Shennong Group to establish swine farming industry in Sarawak, Malaysia

The favourable location of Sarawak, Malaysia and its status as free from foot and mouth disease (FMD) have caught the attention of China's Shennong Agricultural Group of Companies (Shennong Group) for the establishment of the largest swine farming industry in the region, announced Sarawak's Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Borneo Post reported.

The proposed collaboration between Shennong Group and Sarawak Land Development Board (SLDB) holds promising prospects for transforming the local swine farming industry and the broader agricultural sector, said the Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Minister.

Dr Rundi highlighted the economic stimulus and the potential to meet the increasing demand for pork within and beyond the region through this strategic venture. He emphasised the alignment of interests aimed at driving sustainable growth and development in animal husbandry in Sarawak.

Recently, Dr Rundi led a delegation from Sarawak to visit Shennong Group in Kunming, Yunnan, to gain insights into the group's ascent as a premier swine farming corporation in China.

During the visit, discussions were held with Shennong Group chairman Zuxun He, Deputy Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Minister Datuk Martin Ben, and other officials to explore opportunities for collaboration.

Renowned for its adoption of modern farming technologies, Shennong Group has an extensive husbandry industry chain, including sow farms, fattening centres, abattoirs, and meat processing and distribution channels.

The group's success is attributed to its bio-security management practices and proficiency in maintaining low production costs, contributing to its position as a leader in the swine farming sector.
