Hungary confirms ASF in domestic herd

African swine fever (ASF) has been confirmed by Hungary's National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) in a domestic pig herd, prompting immediate measures to prevent further spread of the disease.

The case is considered particularly significant, as this is the first time the virus has been detected in domestic pigs in Hungary.

On June 3, ASF was confirmed by the Nébih laboratory at a large pig farm in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County (northeastern Hungary, bordering Slovakia, Ukraine, and Romania). In response, Dr. Imre Nemes, national chief veterinary officer,  immediately ordered the closure of the farm and the implementation of all necessary epidemic control measures. At the affected holding in the village of Vállaj, the culling of approximately 3,000 pigs is currently underway, alongside an ongoing epidemiological investigation to determine the source of the infection and assess any potential spread.

Authorities have established protection and surveillance zones around the outbreak site and imposed movement restrictions in the area.

Authorities further request that any sudden fever, unexplained deaths, or hemorrhagic symptoms observed in pig herds be reported immediately to a veterinarian.
