Indonesia and Uruguay sign MoU to boost agricultural and livestock cooperation

The Vice Minister of Agriculture of Indonesia, Harvick Hasnul Qolbi, and the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, Fernando Mattos, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing food development in both countries, particularly in the livestock sector, focusing on improving the production of quality meat and milk.
In 2023, the trade value of agricultural products between Indonesia and Uruguay reached approximately US$8.87 million. Vice Minister Harvick expressed high hopes for the collaboration, anticipating an increase in the commercial value of agricultural products. He also emphasised the importance of building sustainable cooperation with Uruguay in the livestock sector.
Uruguay, currently the 7th largest meat producer globally, exports 450,000 tonnes of beef annually. The country is renowned for its modern and sustainable livestock management system, which has prohibited the use of hormones and antibiotics for livestock growth from 1962 to 2011.
Vice Minister Harvick said this collaboration goes beyond trade; it includes exchanging information on agricultural technology development. The primary goal is for both countries to continue developing.
Minister Fernando Mattos echoed these sentiments, recognising significant potential to enhance trade in the agricultural sector while strengthening bilateral relations. He emphasised the shared goal of achieving food self-sufficiency.
Minister Mattos said they have identified key areas to develop the livestock meat and dairy industries to achieve self-sufficiency. Uruguay will support Indonesia with its extensive experience in the livestock sector.
