Indonesia to import three million does of FMD vaccine

Indonesia's director-general of Livestock and Animal Health (PKH) of the Agriculture Ministry, Nasrullah, said that imports of three million doses of the foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccine will commence next week.

"The vaccine will arrive next week. For the early stage, maybe there will be more than three million doses," said Nasrullah at the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) building, Central Jakarta, on June 9.

Nasrullah explained that the vaccines came from various countries but stopped short of specifying which countries. The vaccine will only be injected into healthy livestock in the outbreak area. This means animals that have been infected with FMD will not be vaccinated.

One animal will be injected once and the second booster dose will be administered six months after the first dose.

According to Nasrullah, the handling of the foot and mouth disease will succeed as the number of areas exposed to the outbreak remains low.
