Protests lead to suspension of CP Group's plan to build poultry farms in Taiwan

Thailand's CP Group said on June 5 that its plan to set up six poultry farms in Hualien County, Taiwan, will be suspended due to pressure from protesters concerned about potential environmental impact.

The protesters, which include indigenous villagers, are backed by social groups and have protested for the past weeks in many affected townships, namely, Guangfu, Fenglin and Shoufeng. Hualien County magistrate Hsu Chen-wei had also received a petition.

If realised, the CP farms will produce 375,000 chickens - a main cause of worry for protesters who fear the farm's polluting impact on air and water quality.

CP said it will not start construction of the farms until it can reach agreement with affected local residents.
