Dietary Solutions To Achieve Profitability & Sustainability In Pig Farming

Controlling how pork supplies respond to market conditions is an art in its own right - just consider the implementation of a strategic pork reserve that can meet consumer demand even during a pandemic (pages 4-5).

Undeniably onerous, navigating the pork market requires holistic problem-solving of a multi-faceted puzzle. By examining China's pork and pig production market for example, we can see how consumption tethered to the economic state (page 16) and the inextricable link between pig prices and supply (page 14) can dictate the fortunes of top Chinese pig producers (page 17).

Those developments might be fundamental market realities but as for the upkeeping of a viable pig-producing operation, the proverbial devil in the details goes deeper at the basic levels. One of these is determining how pigs can be better cared for more efficient and sustainable outcomes. Producers can decide how it can be done, regardless of uncontrollable market events.

In this issue of Livestock & Feed Business, Adisseo shows how weaning stress experienced by piglets can be alleviated "by improving microbial control and intestinal development, and providing optimal circumstances for lysolecithins to improve fat digestion and nutrient absorption" through FRA® Digest Health Dry, a combination of "proven" feed additives (pages 8-9).

ADDCON targets pig diets in terms of feed quality. With its ProFeed solution, adverse, synergistic effects of mycotoxins in animals can be eliminated by its detoxifying and binding effects (pages 10-11).

Angel Yeast explains how yeast glycoprotein YeaSense can uplift the production performance of weaned pigs "by improving animal intestinal health, while also reducing the use of antibiotic growth promoters" (pages 12-13).

Whilst tackling issues at these levels of pig production may be deceptively trivial, bigger problems spring from smaller ones that can be further mitigated.

At the dietary level, when producers get how they care for pigs right, a portion of production burdens can be shaved off. Think of the benefit as well: cost-saving and better ROI through efficient production.

It might even be slightly easier to live with some market swings.
