UK swine prices increase steadily

The European Union-Spec Standard Pig Price (EU-Spec SPP) increased by GBX 0.78 (~US$0.009747; GBX 1 = US$ 0.0125) in the week ending May 28, which brings the average price to GBX 176.73 (~US$2.208) per kg, short of the projected input costs of GBX 240 (~US$2.999) per kg deadweight in May, the UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) reported.

Clean swine slaughter was projected at 183,900 head this week, up 5,300 from the previous week. On an EU dressed basis, the average carcase weight was 90.18kg, down 880g from the previous week.

In the week ending May 21, the EU-Spec All Pig Price (APP) averaged GBX 183.92 (~US$2.298) per kg, up GBX 3.49 (~US$0.04361) from the previous week. The spread between both the APP and the SPP now stands at GBX 7.97 (~US$0.0996).

The AHDB said May compound feed prices have risen even more, but forward prices, feed ingredient prices, and future grain prices are all pointing to possible a feed price peak.
