Average UK prime cattle prices down, cattle cull prices up
Average UK prime cattle prices fell GBX 0.5 (~US$ 0.006248; GBX 1 = US$ 0.0125) to GBX 438.2 (~US$5.476) per kg in the week ending May 28, but were still GBP 44 (~US$0.5498) higher than this time last year, the UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board reported.
The price of steers and heifers remained unchanged from the previous week, but the price of young bulls fell by GBX 1.6 (~US$0.01999) per kg.
The estimated slaughter for the week was 35,300 head, up 800 from the previous week and up 13% from the 5-year average for this time of year.
Cull cattle prices increased by GBX 2.7 (~S$0.03374) to GX 362.1 ~(US$4.525) per kg this week, a new high, just in time for the UK's Jubilee bank holiday weekend, which kicks off the grilling season.
Cull cattle slaughter was estimated at 9,200 head, up only 100 head from the previous week and in line with the 5-year average.
