Cargill shifts beef production amid strike at Canadian plant

Cargill Inc is redirecting beef production to other facilities following a weeklong strike that halted operations at its Canadian plant in Guelph, Ontario, Bloomberg reported.

Operations at Cargill's Dunlop plant, which processes 1,500 head of cattle daily, were suspended after approximately 1,000 workers began striking on May 27, 2024. The workers rejected a proposal from the US meatpacker that would have increased wages by 9.3% in the first year of a four-year agreement.

A Cargill spokesperson said they will shift production to other facilities within their broad supply chain footprint to minimise any disruptions to customers.

The suspension at the Ontario plant occurs as profit margins for North American beef producers face pressure due to a shortage of slaughter-weight cattle.
