Malaysia will no longer offer subsidies to poultry farmers from July 1
Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that his government will no longer offer subsidies to poultry farmers from July 1, because many farmers did not take up the offer, Free Malaysia Today reported.
The Malaysian government had offered over MYR 720 million (~US$164 million; MYR 1 = US$0.23) in subsidies to poultry farmers to stop the rise in chicken prices.
The Prime Minister said the subsidies will instead be channelled to the public.
More details will be provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs at a late date.
In a report published in local daily The Star, Ronald Kiandee, the Agriculture and Food Industries Minister, said poultry farmers can still submit their applications for subsidies after the June 5 deadline.
Kiandee said the application procedure had been shortened so local state governments can provide approvals.
Malaysia had announced subsidies for the poultry industry on February 9 at MYR 0.60 (~US$0.14) to maintain live chicken prices at MYR 5.90 (~US$1.34) per kg and the standard chicken retail price of MYR 8.90 (~US$2.03) per kg.
