The trend towards antibiotic reduction - a China perspective (Part I)

April's China Feed Expo in Fuzhou city was an excellent indicator of the trend towards antibiotic reduction in the country. Apart from a well-received forum on the theme of antibiotic reduction held pre-event, numerous ‘antibiotic-alternative' feed additive products were showcased during the two-day Expo.

And earlier in March, China's agriculture ministry held the 10th edition of its CTO Club meeting in Wuhan city, which was well-attended by technological heavyweights in the feed industry, and the hot topics of ‘antibiotic reduction' and ‘antibiotic-free' were also high on the agenda. The meeting was hosted by Mr. Hong Ping, chairman of the CTO Club and Anyou Group, and Dr. Liu Shi Jie of the Feed Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and secretary general of the Club. Dr. Yang Hong Ye of Cargill Animal Nutrition and Dr. Mu Yu Yun of Shanghai Xinnong Feed shared much technical insights, leading the discussion into the implementation of antibiotic replacement programmes under new government policies.

The close attention paid to the discussion on antibiotic reduction this spring did not come out of thin air. In July 2016, the agriculture ministry published document No. 2428, which announced the ban of colistin sulphate for feed use after April 2017. Colistin sulphate is a low-cost medicated feed additive, particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria. As the drug has been widely used to prevent piglet diarrhoea, its ban is sending huge ripple effects across the feed industry.
