Japan's Feed One to establish new factory on robust local aquaculture industry

Japanese animal feed maker Feed One Co. will invest about ¥13 billion (US$91 million) to build a new compound aquatic feed plant in Toyokawa, Aichi Prefecture.

The move is aimed at expanding the company's aquafeed production capacity to meet changing demand from the aquaculture industry.

The plant is scheduled for completion in April 2028 and will eventually replace the company's existing Chita plant in Aichi. The new Toyokawa facility will double Chita's annual production capacity to 40,000 tonnes.

Feed One has confirmed the acquisition of a 27,1957 square meter plot of land in Toyokawa, with construction expected to begin in the second half of fiscal 2025 and end in March 2026.

The company added that it has secured land for future expansion purposes to meet further production needs.

The Toyokawa plant will become one of Feed One's two aquatic feed plants, along with the Kitakyushu plant in Fukuoka Prefecture, which will go into operation in 2027. The Chita plant, on the other hand, will continue to produce animal feed.

While much of Japan's marine aquaculture industry remains concentrated in southern and western coastal regions of Japan, such as Kyushu and Shikoku, rising sea temperatures are forcing a shift of production north and inland.

Feed One cited this trend as a key reason for its decision to set up shop in central Japan, where several land-based aquaculture projects are under development.

The company also plans to develop new feeds suitable for offshore and onshore aquaculture, including fishmeal-free formulations, insect protein feeds, elastic pellets and micro-sized pellets, as well as diets for farmed species.

Feed One said the new plant will reduce fuel consumption by 15% and labour costs by 50% compared to the current Chita facility, in line with the company's goal of improving production efficiency.
