Impossible Foods opens online sales direct to consumers
The company will start selling its plant-based meat burgers to consumers through its website in the United States, with demand for vegan meats on the rise with surging beef prices because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Reuters reported.
The new direct-to-consumer sales channel is part of the company's approach to expand its retail footprint after increased demand for their meats from restaurants and retailers.
Beef prices have gone up as due to shortages caused by the temporary closure of major meat plants in the United States as workers are infected with COVID-19. As a result, consumers have switched to alternative vegan meats.
Nielsen reported fresh meat alternative sales increased 178.5% in the week ended May 23. Fresh meat sales increased 24.4%.
Impossible Foods already has retail footprint in 3,000 grocery stores in the United States, which include Kroger, Wegmans, Albertonsons, Gelson's H-E-B and Safeway.
All orders placed on Impossible Foods' website will be shipped for free, and delivery will only take two days.
