Volatile chicken prices in Indonesia leave farmers struggling

Chicken prices in Indonesia appear to stabilise again after a sharp drop that left farmers reeling.

Based on CNBC Indonesia's monitoring at one of the poultry slaughterhouses (RPHU) and broiler chicken sellers in the Pulo Gadung area, East Jakarta last week, it was observed that the price of broiler chicken meat had started to stabilse.

For the large size, it has returned to Rp 19,000 (US$1.16) per head. While for the small size, it has returned to Rp 20,000 (US$1.22) per head.

Patan, a broiler chicken seller, said prices had begun to improve over the past week.

"It has improved, back to the price of IDR 19,000-IDR 20,000 (US$1.16 – US$1.22) per head. It's been a week," said Patan.

According to him, the price had dropped to IDR 18,000 (US$1.10) per head, two weeks after Eid 2025.

"Yes, it dropped to IDR 18,000 (US$1.10) per head two weeks after Eid, after that, the price fluctuated, aka went up and down," added Patan.

Regarding supply, he said it was relatively safe as chicken retrieval was not only taken from one farm.

"The supply is safe, because we don't just take it from one farm, there are several, such as in Cirebon, then in Tegal, and several areas in Central Java," he said.

Likewise, Jaya, another broiler chicken seller, admitted that the price had started to improve.

"Yes, it has started to return to IDR 20,000 (US$1.22) per head, previously it was IDR 17,000  (US$1.04) per head, that was the lowest price," said Jaya.

Another chicken seller, Seto, said chicken prices had started to stabilise in the range of Rp 19,000 (US$1.16)-20,000  (US$1.22)per head.

"The price has improved, it's starting to go up again to Rp19,000-20,000. The small ones have started to go up to Rp20,000 (US$1.22), but the big ones are still Rp19,000 (US$1.16)," said Seto.

According to him, the price of chicken had fallen to IDR 17,000 (US$1.04) per head and tended to be unstable.

"Yes, it had dropped to IDR 17,000 (US$1.04) per head, but at that time it was not stable at IDR 17,000 (US$1.04), but went up and down," added Seto.

However, he said that at the farmer level, the price had fallen and was lower at the seller or cutter level.

"Last week, the price here was Rp. 17,000 (US$1.04). At the farmers' level, it could be worse, yes, it could be Rp. 13,000 (US$0.79)-Rp. 15,000 (US$0.92), they are more grimacing than us," he concluded.
