Hong Kong to put down 4,700 pigs after second ASF case
 

Hong Kong will put down 4,700 pigs following the discovery of African swine fever (ASF) at a slaughterhouse near to the border with China, AFP reported.

It is the second case in the Chinese special administrative region in a month.

The affected animal originated from a farm in Guangdong, China. The facility at where it was housed - a government-run slaughterhouse in Sheung Shui - will be closed for cleansing and disinfection.

According to Hong Kong's Secretary of Food and Health Department Sophia Chan, importation from mainland China has been stopped for now.

Last month, around 6,000 pigs were culled after the ASF virus was detected in a pig imported from a farm in the same province. Supply from across the border was temporarily suspended for a week during the disinfection of slaughterhouse.
