Brazil's April beef exports down 2%
Brazilian beef exports during April fell to 78,427 tonnes swt when compared with March and was 8% below on-year.
This has been mainly the result of tight cattle supplies, dearer prices and competition from the domestic market.
Exports to Russia recovered 20% on-month to 25,843 tonnes swt as a result of higher quotes in that market after the distribution of the remaining 75% of the import quota among local traders, improved economic stability and low stocks.
Exports to Iran, Brazil's second largest market, decreased 14% in March to 15,093 tonnes swt, but remained 303% higher on-year, as high demand in this market is expected to remain throughout 2010.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian industry remains focused in opening new markets this year, with Turkey recently announcing the commencing of beef imports from Brazil. The Turkish government is yet to specify their import conditions, probably with import licences or quotas.
