India ranked 17th worldwide for poultry products production
India is the fifth largest producer of eggs and ninth largest producer of poultry meat in the world, producing over 34 billion eggs and about 600,000 tonnes of poultry meat in 2004.
In the global market for poultry products, India is positioned 17th in "World Poultry Production". Over the past decade the poultry industry in India has contributed about US$229million, to the country's Gross National Product (GNP).
Several breakthroughs in poultry science and technology have led to the development of genetically improved breeds capable of higher production. The average per capita poultry meat consumption is estimated to increase from 0.69 to 1.28 kg, during 2000-2004.
Total egg consumption is estimated to increase from 34 billion in 2000 to 106 billion in 2020, while poultry meat consumption is likely to increase from 687 million kg to 1,674 million kg.
