Aquaculture industry in Denmark to receive US$213 million in funding

 


The government of Denmark has announced that EUR 200 million (~US$213 million; EUR 1 = US$1.07) from its European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund will be used to improve resource efficiency and competitiveness of SMEs in its aquaculture sector, Fish Information & Services reported.


The funds will also be used to safeguard and restore biodiversity through selective fishing gear development and river restoration.

 

Denmark's commitment to including fisheries and aquaculture industries in the country's green transition, allowing them to remain sustainable and profitable moving forward, was highlighted in a statement released by the European Commission.

 

The fund is part of the country's goal of making the country greener, more connected, and inclusive.

 

Virginijus Sinkeviius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, said this Partnership Agreement will allow Denmark to build a resilient, sustainable, and low-carbon fisheries and aquaculture industry, as well as further develop its aquatic environment and resources sustainably of the fishery and aquaculture sector.

 

In 2020, Denmark exported 196,452 metric tonnes of salmon, up from 109,535 metric tonnes in 2019. The fish processing industry in Denmark generated nearly DKK 14 billion (~US$2 billion; DKK 1 = US$0.14) in annual revenue in 2020.
