Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance calls to intensify local food production
Timothy Kennedy, president and CEO of the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance, has called on the Canadian government to intensify domestic food production to sustainably and affordably feed consumers locally and around the world, Fish Information & Services reported.
In a letter to the Canadian government, the alliance urged to prioritise food security and productivity in the policy and decision-making process, making secure food production and supply a top consideration in policy and funding decisions.
The Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance also sought focus on a flexible, modern regulatory environment that encourages production growth, as outlined in the 2019 Agri-Food and Aquaculture Roadmap, which emphasised the importance of predictable and efficient regulations in lowering barriers to investment, innovation, and growth.
Canada is the fourth biggest farmed Atlantic salmon producer in the world. But the Trudeau government has publicly criticised the nation's salmon aquaculture sector and is aiming to abolish out traditional open net pen farming in British Columbia.
