Ukraine grain exports rise in May

Ukraine's grain exports rose to 766,600 tonnes in May from 459,300 tonnes in April, analyst UkrAgroConsult said on Wednesday (June 1).

Exports included 729,000 tonnes of corn, 27,600 tonnes of wheat and 10,000 tonnes of other cereals, UkrAgroConsult said in a report. They went mostly to Turkey, Egypt, Iran and Greece.

Preliminary data show that Ukraine has exported about 10.5 million tonnes of grain in the first 11 months of the 2010-11 season compared to 20.7 million tonnes in the same period in 2009-10. Export quotas imposed in October were the main reason for the fall, analysts have said.

Ukraine exported 21.5 million tonnes of grain in 2009-10 and analysts say the export will not exceed 12 million tonnes this season.
