Malaysia to assist parties seeking to import chicken and other food supplies

Datuk Haslina Abdul Hamid, Malaysia's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI) secretary-general, said they will assist parties seeking to import chicken and other food supplies into the nation, especially from legal processing plants, as import permits (AP) were abolished, Bernama reported.

She said that the initiative to import hens, as well as the Cabinet instruction to halt poultry exports on June 1, will be able to quickly stabilise the poultry supply.

Haslina said that MAFI was committed to boosting the country's self-sufficiency, particularly in meat production, in terms of long-term solutions to the national food supply issue.

She mentioned corn as an example, saying that the grain, which was formerly imported and used as animal feed, is now being cultivated on a huge scale in the country in Chuping, Perlis, with the help of government-linked firms.

Datuk Azman Mohd Yusof, the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) secretary-general, said the issue of rising prices and a scarcity of chicken supply is likely to be rectified within a month.

He said consumers who find chickens being sold at a high price can file a formal complaint by providing specific details through the numerous avenues provided by KPDNHEP.

He also said KPDNHEP will continue to organise various sales programmes from time to time to enable the public acquire vital commodities at affordable prices.
