Pigs exported to Vietnam not ASF-infected, Thailand says

Thailand said on May 30 that pigs exported to Vietnam earlier in May were not infected with the African swine fever (ASF) prior to departure.

Thailand's announcement came after Vietnam said that it will suspend the import of live pigs from the former from June 30 onwards after it discovered a batch of imported hogs had ASF.

In response, Sorawit Thanito, director-general of the Thai Department of Livestock Development, said the pigs had been tested for the flu before they were exported.

Thailand will now require stricter inspections for live pigs at animal quarantine checkpoints before being exported to Vietnam, Thanito said.

"We will consider immediately suspending exports of live pigs to Vietnam if further problems arise," he added.
