Indonesia to cut shrimp imports in brood stock by 70 percent

Indonesia hopes to slash by 70 percent its imports of shrimps in brood stock and parent stock after its breeding centers start production toward the end of this year.

So far annual requirement of parent shrimps and shrimps in brood stock have been supplied almost entirely through imports.

An official said that the government hopes to increase shrimp production to 540,000 tonnes this year, for which 900,000 parent shrimps and 52.31 billion shrimps in fry will be needed.

Fishery and Fish Breeding director general Made L. Nurdjana said Indonesia has imported 90 percent of its shrimp fry and parent shrimps mainly from the US.

The fishery ministry plans to build two brood stock centres breeding high quality vannamei shrimps in Situbondo and Bali, and is expected to turn out 4.5 million shrimp parent by October, 2009.
