Ukraine projects corn crop at 13.2-13.5 million tonnes

The expected harvest of Ukrainian corn in 2011 will be 13.2-13.5 million tonnes, said UkrAgroConsult.

UkrAgroConsult analysts say that in 2010 the acreages of corn increased significantly. Despite the heat and drought, high yield was achieved. The largest export quotas have been allotted for corn.

The expansion of acreages, growth of imported quality seeds and favourable weather conditions are factors leading to the prediction of a record corn crop in 2011. According to UkrAgroConsult, corn harvest is estimated at 13.2-13.5 million tonnes, but the market has more optimistic assessments, reaching 15 million tonnes.

A record harvest gives grounds for improving estimates of export potential. According to preliminary estimates, with the harvest of 13.5 million tonnes the export capacity is about 7.5 million tonnes, which is a record for Ukraine.
