African swine fever over at last for Philippines?
The outbreak of this disease was first confirmed in the country in July 2019 and has since spread to 73 provinces.
As of March 26 this year, 99 barangays in 17 municipalities of 12 provinces are still dealing with active ASF cases.
Pig farming in the Philippines is not out of the woods. But, in recent times, there appears to be growing confidence in dealing with this threat.
It remains to be seen how the Philippines will eventually overcome ASF. The Western Visayas region, which Iolilo is a part of, has embarked on the path to recovery, but its situation is still precarious.
Nevertheless, the Philippines' hog production could rise, albeit at a slower pace, by 3%, according to the president of the National Federation of Hog Farmers Inc.
How this increase could materialise would be contingent partly on how the country keeps ASF in check.
