USDA approves NutraCea rice bran as poultry meat enhancer

The USDA has approved NutraCea to supply its stabilised rice bran as an enhancer to food companies that prepared pulverised meat and poultry products.

NutraCea hopes the approval will assist them in penetrating new markets and has filed for a provisional patent for the rice brand, both in the US and worldwide.


Stabilised rice bran has nutritional benefits and can be used in meat and poultry sausages that contain binders, nugget-shaped patties, meatballs, meatloaf and meat and poultry patties, according to the company.


An independent study conducted at Iowa State University said the rice bran will reduce input costs and also cause minimal change in taste in the meat.
