More than 1,000 small holder poultry farmers in Nigeria by country's agriculture ministry

Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, has trained and empowered 1,110 small holder poultry farmers across the six geopolitical zones in the country.

This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Tope Fashedemi — who was represented by the Federal Director of Agricultural Extension Services, Dr. Deola Lordbanjou — during the training and empowerment of beneficiaries of a programme in Ogun State.

The empowerment was held under the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy programme, with training and empowerment held in 36 Nigerian states.

Each beneficiary received day old chicks, feeds and cash support to raise the broilers chicken to market weight.

Fashedemi said: "The objective of the training and empowerment is to lift the small holders poultry farmers in Nigeria out of poverty by training them on modern technology of rearing broiler chicken and also arouse their interest in broiler production enterprise after the initial support from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security."

He explained that "the inputs given are to encourage the farmers in sustainable poultry production, having realised how profitable it is to engage in the business of  broiler production."
