Brazil chicken, pork exports to rise five percent this year

Brazil's Minister of Agriculture said Thursday (May 28) that Brazil should see an increase of 5 percent in chicken and pork exports in 2009 versus 2008, local news service Estado reported.

Reinhold Stephanes said the increase is due to higher sales, especially to China and Russia, Estado reported.

Brazilian chicken exports hit a record 3.6 million tonnes in 2008, up 11 percent from 2007, according to Brazil's Chicken Exporters Association, or ABEF.

Brazil exported 529,410 tonnes of pork worldwide in 2008, Brazil's Pork Industry Association said recently.

The Brazilian government signed an agreement with the Chinese government earlier this month to export chickens to China. Brazilian exporters, however, are still waiting for export licenses.

No deal was signed regarding pork, but talks are expected to continue later this year.

Brazil is the world's No. 1 exporter of poultry and a leading exporter of pork.
