Australia to penetrate China's cattle market

Australia has recently launched intensified activities to win China's booming cattle market.

A delegation led by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) has met with more than 140 Chinese importers and retailers during the course of a 10-day visit.

The Australian delegation represents more than a dozen meat processors and exporters.

The team also includes Cattle Council of Australia representative Hamish Munro, a cattle producer from Cumnock.

Glen Thompson, MLA regional manager for South East Asia and China, said the market was 99 percent supplied by domestic Chinese cattle.

Thompson pointed out that the potential was exciting for Australia's red meat industry, which now recognises opportunities beyond the high-end market, in the lower-value cuts.
