EFL AG-DATA: Indonesia methionine market remains volatile amid persistent supply tightness

Indonesia's methionine market remained highly volatile between April and May 2026.

Ongoing supply shortages, fluctuating Chinese export availability, and strong import dependence continued to disrupt the amino acid sector.

Although prices eased slightly after a sharp surge in April, methionine values stayed historically elevated due to limited spot supply and steady feed demand, with market participants expecting continued volatility in the near term.

Indonesia Methionine: Prices surge further on ongoing supply shortage (week ended April 17, 2026)

The amino acid market remained highly volatile, driven by tight global supply and strong import dependence on China.

Continued production constraints and logistics disruptions have limited availability across Southeast Asia, while feed demand remains stable. Among all amino acids, methionine continues to experience the most severe supply imbalance.

Methionine prices surged from Rp87,000/kg (US$5.04) to Rp134,980/kg (US$7.87). The sharp increase reflects the ongoing shortage of DL-Methionine (DLM) in Indonesia, with limited spot supply and aggressive supplier pricing.

The market is expected to remain highly volatile, with strong upside risk.

Indonesia Methionine: Prices ease but remain elevated amid tight supply (week ended May 1, 2026)

The amino acid market remained volatile, influenced by tight regional supply and fluctuating import availability from China.

Although some supply pressure eased compared to previous weeks, feed producers continued to face high replacement costs for essential amino acids. Market sentiment remained cautious as livestock sector margins stayed weak.

Methionine prices declined from Rp134,980/kg (US$7.87) to Rp124,430/kg (US$7.18) over the period. Despite the correction, prices remain historically high due to ongoing tight DL-Methionine supply in Indonesia and limited spot market availability.

The market outlook remains firm, with continued volatility expected.

Indonesia Methionine: Prices rebound as supply tightness persists (week ended May 15, 2026)

The amino acid market remained volatile as global supply conditions for several key products stayed tight, particularly for methionine. Chinese producers continued to face fluctuating operating rates and export allocation adjustments, while Indonesian buyers remained dependent on imports amid limited domestic production. Feed producers also maintained cautious purchasing strategies due to weak poultry margins, although essential amino acids continued to receive procurement support because of stable feed production requirements.

Methionine prices declined from Rp124,430/kg (US$7.18) to Rp123,650/kg (US$7.14) before rebounding to Rp125,740/kg (US$7.07). The recovery reflects persistent supply tightness and steady feed demand.

The market outlook remains firm, with continued volatility expected.
