Brazil's Diplomata sets up chicken processing plant in Rio Grande do Sul

Brazil's Diplomata Alimentos, based at Parana state, is setting up a poultry processing unit at Rio Grande do Sul.

The first phase of the plant, expected to be completed by 2009, would allow slaughter of 70,000 chickens daily. This capacity would be doubled after a new working shift has been introduced.

Output from the plant would be slated for export.

Investment at the plant is estimated at 35 million reals (US$ 18 million).

Diplomata would source its chickens from local farms, as local laws prohibits interstate movement of poultry.

A chicken unit at Santa Catarina would receive chickens from 130 farmers from Rio Grande do Sul. Diplomata processes 450,000 animals per day in plants based at Parana and Santa Catarina states.
