30,000 tonnes of frozen pork to be auctioned from China's state reserves

The China Merchandise Reserve Management Center said it will auction 30,000 tonnes of frozen pork from the country's state reserves on May 27, Reuters reported.

The center has auctioned about 330,000 tonnes of frozen pork from state reserves since the beginning of this year to supplement dwindling supplies of pork.

An African swine fever (ASF) outbreak in China has decimated close to 40% of the nation's swine herd, forcing China to approve more overseas import sources for pork. China had introduced new measures to boost domestic production, but the recent COVID-19 pandemic further dented the country's progress to resume pre-ASF production.
