Sanderson to postpone chicken processing plant's construction

Sanderson's intention to establish a controversial poultry plant in Nash County is delayed following a US$16.3 million loss in the second quarter.

Sanderson Farms announced earlier this year that plans for a new processing plant in North Carolina were on hold. Those sentiments were echoed in a conference call with shareholders on Tuesday (May 24), according to the media.

The new chicken processing plant has received opposition since the idea's inception. Residents fear that waste will harm the water supply for the surrounding community. Some critics have filed a lawsuit to stop Sanderson Farms from building in southern Nash County near the Wilson County line.
