Finland's pork demand surpasses production
Overproduction of pork in Finland has changed to a situation where demand surmounts production.
According to food industry company Atria, pork consumption is expected to total 195 million-197 million kilogrammes in 2012, while production remains at about 190 million kilogrammes. Beef consumption has been at around 95 million kilogrammes for a long time, while production is about 80 million kilogrammes. In the case of broiler, production and consumption are in balance.
In recent years, Atria has exported 10-15% of its production but now the company is reducing exports to below 10%. Atria continues to market products to China that are not bought in Finland, such as pig tails. The amount of imported meat has increased but Atria wants to continue to use domestic meat.
