USDA reports slight decline in April US milk production
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that US milk production in April 2024 was slightly lower compared to both March 2024 and April 2023, Brownfield Ag News reported.
In April, milk production in the 24 primary dairy-producing states totalled 18.3 billion pounds, while nationwide production reached 19.1 billion pounds. This represents a decrease of about 500 million pounds from the previous month and 69 million pounds less than the nationwide total for April 2023.
The number of dairy cattle in the 24 major dairy states was down by 55,000 head from the previous year. California holds the largest number of dairy cattle, with 1.7 million head producing 3.54 billion pounds of milk. Wisconsin follows with 1.2 million head producing 2.72 billion pounds of milk. Michigan maintains the highest milk production per cow, averaging 2,300 pounds per cow.
The USDA also revised their March production figures slightly higher to 18.9 billion pounds.
