Singapore Food Agency urges consumers to switch to other meats following Malaysia halting chicken exports
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has urged consumers to switch to other meats and buy only what they need following Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaacob's announcement that the country is halting chicken exports, Today Online reported.
The SFA said they are monitoring the situation on chicken imports sourced from Malaysia and are in discussion with stakeholders to minimise the impact on Singapore's poultry supply.
The agency said Singapore importers will increase imports from alternative countries for chilled and frozen chicken, or draw from existing poultry stocks.
The SFA said frozen chicken options will remain available for Singaporean consumers to alleviate the supply shortage, but there may be a disruption in chilled chicken supply.
The SFA has urged consumers to consider switching to frozen chicken and purchase other meat products. The agency also advised consumers to only buy what they need.
The SFA said 34% of chicken imported into Singapore in 2021 is sourced from Singapore, with almost all being live chicken.
