Malaysian consumer group calls for government-owned chicken farms

Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman, deputy president of the Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (Fomca), has called on the Malaysian government to own and operate its own chicken farms to ensure sufficient poultry supply, the New Straits Times reported.

He said the farms can be operated by government-linked companies or livestock management agencies.

He claimed that the current poultry shortage is caused by cartels that control chicken price and production.

Yusof said even if the chicken supply shortage is for a short period, consumers will be affected as soaring prices for the meat will be hard to drop. Chicken prices have gone up because of a short supply of workers, high livestock feed costs, and increased consumer demand.

He said government-owned chicken farms will be an alternative to relying on private companies.
