Australian aquaculture firm Barramundi Group plans US$350 million expansion

Australian aquaculture firm Barramundi Group, the trading name of Marine Produce Australia, is planning a US$350 million expansion in Western Australia, off the remote Kimberly coast, Fish Information & Services reported.

Andreas von Scholten, chief executive officer of Barramundi Group, said they have 13 marine sites identified that will potentially expand the firm's capacity to 30,000 tonnes production per year.

The expansion, which includes a proposal to develop three land-based fish nurseries and a processing facility, is set to create up to 400 jobs and local business opportunities.

Von Scholten said they have learnt from existing operations to expand in harmony with local flora and fauna, boost biosecurity, and provide jobs and opportunities for local communities in this remote region of the country.

He said they are discussing with Kimberly region stakeholders, which include Traditional Owners who have native title over this area.

Barramundi Group is the biggest producer of barramundi in Australasia, with markets in Singapore, Australia, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, and the US. The company is certified by Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).

The firm's plans for expansion is being reviewed by Australia's Environmental Protection Authority.
