Turkey's cattle number up 12.3% in 2012
 

 

The number of cattle in Turkey increased by 12.3% in 2012 over the previous year, while the number of sheep and goats went up by 10.7%.

 

This was announced by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) on Wednesday (May 15).

 

In 2012, the total number of cattle stood at 13.9 million, the sheep population was 27.4 million and goats numbered 8.3 million. Total milk production also increased by 15.6% in 2012 and reached 17 million tonnes, of which 91.8% constituted milk from cows, 5.7% from sheep and 2.1% from goats.

 

The figures for poultry, however, increased during this period by 6.6%. The number of broilers increased by 6.4%, reaching 169 million, and the number of hens increased by 7.2% to 85 million. The number of turkeys went up by 7.7%, bringing the total figure to 2.8 million in 2012. The number of ducks and geese declined by 6.7% and 0.5%, respectively.
