EU milk powder exports soar in Q1

In the first three months of 2014, EU milk powder exports rose significantly on-year, with skim milk powder (SMP) and whole milk powder (WMP) making the largest gains, according to DairyCo.

EU's SMP exports were up 57% on-year, boosted by an extra 10 thousand tonnes to Algeria and increasing exports to Indonesia. Chinese SMP import also surged with an eight-fold increase.

Algeria became the largest market for EU WMP exports in Q1 2014, accounting for 20% of the total volume and representing a 28% rise in EU WMP exports.

DairyCo says that the rise in exports is due to the competitiveness of EU powder prices on global markets over the past year.

However, DairyCo also highlighted that EU cheese is the only dairy product that saw a 1% year-on-year fall in exports, primarily due to a 4% decrease in exports to Russia. Shipments of butter to Russia grew by almost 1/3, an overall 19% increase in EU butter exports.
