Australia's Norco milk co-operative to export fresh milk to China
Chinese buyers and Norco milk co-operative inked a deal, the first in Australia that allows fresh pasteurised milk to be shipped straight from local factories to China within its normal shelf life of seven days.
The first shipment of over 4000 litres of milk was delivered last week.
For the last 12 months, the average return to farmers who sell milk to the Australian supermarkets was under AUD50 cents (US$0.46) per litre.
Retail prices in China are estimated to be between AUD7 (US$6.46) and AUD9 (US$8.31) per litre. The logistics chain has the capacity to deliver more than 20 million litres in the first 12 months.
