Brazil's Santa Catarina state seen opening for beef, pork trade

Santa Catarina state in south Brazil should get the green light to export beef and pork next week from the World Organization of Animal Health (OIE), the local Estado newswire reported Friday (May 18).

OIE is meeting next week in Paris to discuss animal health and safety matters in Brazil and elsewhere.

Some nations, including Russia, have banned meat exports from the state because of FMD in neighbouring Parana state.

The newswire reported that Pedro Camargo Neto, a Brazilian trade negotiator and president of the Pork Meat Exporting Association, Abipecs, said OIE was leaning toward giving the state a clean bill of health.

OIE's decision would make it easier for Santa Catarina to export pork, one of its main export goods.

However, Santa Catarina's main pork market, Russia, is not a member of the World Trade Organization and would be under no political pressure to abide by OIE's decisions.

Neto said OIE's ruling would bode well for the state's export opportunities in Chile, Japan, Europe and even the US, the newswire reported.

The state is not a major beef exporter.
