Malaysian farmers' association refutes claims of chicken farms shutting down

The Federation of Livestock Farmers Association of Malaysia (FLFAM) has refuted claims that chicken farms are planning to shut down operations this coming weekend to protest delayed government subsidy payments, The Sun Daily reported.

Datuk Jeffrey Ng, FLFAM advisor, said if the claims were true, the action is personal and the farms will need to bear the risks involved.

He said it is common for poultry producers or firms to shut down operations based on their needs, and the association will not advise members to close operations unless there are reasons like manpower shortage or company problems.

He also said the FLFAM said they cannot stop members from protesting but the association should not be involved.

It was reported that a group of poultry industry cartels are planning to close poultry farms on May 21 and May 22 to protest delayed government subsidy payments.

Ng said the association has not gotten reports or complaints from its 2,400 members. He said any problems can be taken up to the responsible agency as there is a positive relationship between the Malaysian government and FLFAM.
